Artist Statement
Erotic Compromise hat logo
My recent work chronicles my experiences with gay culture outside of the metropolitan mainstream, in the wilds of upstate New York and rural Northern California, where it is often invisible or at the very least carefully camouflaged. "Rest Stop" and "Scenic Overlook" mythologize the re-purposing of wooded areas for sexual rendezvous. Erotic Compromise blends trucker hat chic with the kink hanky code of the late 70’s/early 80’s gay bar scene to create a new method of sexual signification.
The Bear Bait Series peers into the world of the queer Bear subculture, recasting Andy Warhol’s early iconic drawings of “golden boys” with decidedly more mature, hirsute models (and a little of Magritte’s Ceci n’est pas une pipe thrown in for good measure). "Playground Etiquette", "Hustle For Your Muscle Machine", "O You Handsome Devil" and "Beast of Burden" spin fanciful and cautionary "fairy" tale yarns.
Biography
A native upstate New Yorker, Edward J. Luce’s recent move to Davis, CA from Manhattan has dropped him back into the kooky, mysterious woods that often fuel his imagination. A lover of Bears, Wrasslers, Zombies and Truckers, his paintings, installations and performances examine the complexities of desire, with a healthy dose of humor. He received his MFA from the University of California, San Diego and has studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work has been exhibited in galleries, museums, store windows and bathrooms from San Diego to Buffalo to Paris.
